Grandma's Date Sticks

Preheat oven to 325º F.
Cream sugar and butter together. Add eggs and hot water and mix well. Sift together flour and baking powder and mix into sugar and butter mixture. Stir in walnuts, dates, lemon juice, and salt.
Choose a baking pan that will accommodate about an all-over thickness of ½ inch raw dough, which will rise to close to 1 inch when baked. Grease pan well. Bake 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and cool pan on rack. If desired, sift powdered sugar over the top as it cools. Cut into sticks.

2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 heaping tbsp. butter
- 4 eggs, beaten, room temperature
- 2 tbsp. hot water
- 2 cups flour

- ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1 lb. pitted dates, cut into small pieces (now you can buy chopped dates)
- Small squeeze of lemon juice
- Pinch of salt
